A Bobohizan is the spiritual shaman of the Kadazandusun people and keeper of the culture – being experts in spiritual matters and rituals. They are the medium between our world and that of the spirits to maintain harmony between the two worlds.
Most Bobohizans are women as traditionally, men were the hunters. Their cultural knowledge, beliefs and practices have been passed on orally and through observation.
Sadly, this is a dying culture as many of them are now too old and not able to conduct any rituals or fully pass along their knowledge. It will be a tremendous loss when this happens
