Hinava is one of the traditional native dishes of the Kadazan-Dusun people you should try when visiting Sabah. Often called Hinava or Hinava Ginapan, this dish is made from fresh fish meat, marinated with lime juice, mixed with grated Bambangan seeds, red chilies, ginger, onions, and salt. Think of it as eating sushi!

There are many types of different fish that can be used to make Hinava but most often tenggiri or mackerel is used. Alternatively, there are people making use of sharks, squid, or shrimp to prepare this dish.

Usually, this dish is served during festive occasions but you can now find it at some local restaurants that specialise in Sabah dishes.
